Urinary Catheters

If urinary catheterisation is prolonged, then daily clamping for 2-3 hours by nursing staff
should be commenced as soon as it is clinically safe.
If the patient is alert and able to use his upper limbs, then he should be converted to a
flip – flow valve as soon as it is clinically safe.
The catheter should be cleaned daily with an aseptic technique and changed every six
weeks.
All casualties with genitourinary trauma should be referred to the Military Genitourinary
Reconstruction team.
